Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

In our most recent Quick Boost poll we participants about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).  We asked about it because there is a tremendous amount of research that shows that it is very effective for treating depression.  It has been made popular by a number of helpful books, not the least of these is Feeling Good by Dr. David Burns an psychiatrist.

The biggest response to our poll was "I don't know what CBT is".  A third of our respondents choose this.  This is very sad because this is such an important technique for therapy and for self-study.  Countless hours of therapy and personal work might be wasted by depressed people because they don't know about CBT.

CBT is based on a simple but powerful idea.  What we think and what we do influences our feelings or our mood.  In my experience we usually think the other way around - that our mood affects our thoughts and what we do or don't do.  We want to feel motivated to get on with our lives.  We want to feel happy in order to consider a new way to think about a relationship, a career or other important issue in our lives.  When we are depressed we might wait a very long time for our mood to improve on its own.

CBT helps us to learn how to examine our thoughts and find those that are distorted or dysfunctional.  By noticing our specific thoughts we can avoid those that tend to get us down or keep us from doing something that would be helpful.
