What to expect from a GPS Support Group
The GPS model draws on a variety of evidence-based therapeutic and support group modalities including Cognitive Behavioral and Interpersonal Therapies, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction, Motivational Interviewing, Re-evaluation Counseling, Positive Psychology, Psycho-social Education, Life Course and Social Justice Theories.
GPS is grounded in a strong trauma-informed methodology which is incorporated into each aspect of the group rationale and implementation. There is a strong emphasis on cultural humility and the reality of the intersectionality of poverty, race, gender and cultural messaging, with a specialized focus on at-risk populations. In the process of sharing what is REAL, reflecting and being deeply heard in a community of trust, we break down isolation, decrease stigma and find relief. We remember the values and strength that lie at the very heart of each of us.
Our trained facilitators reflect the communities of people who deserve and seek support. GPS facilitators have diverse lived experiences, identities, racial, cultural and faith backgrounds. Our facilitators have experiences with a spectrum of relatable and challenging situations, such as perinatal and ongoing parenting stress/anxiety and crisis, bereavement, living with the reality and heartbreak of racism, homelessness, recovery, incarceration, Covid-19 stress, among many more. GPS facilitators are skilled in maintaining a trauma-responsive and warm environment so participants can address and heal from past trauma, express vulnerable feelings, and find strength together.
Culturally Co-created for Diverse Populations
No two communities are exactly the same. We believe that GPS should be centered around the unique community utilizing the model. Trusted leaders from within the community are given the tools of the GPS model which acknowledge both the challenges and strengths within the community. All people deserve to be supported by a model that remembers and values who they are and is built to address their unique struggles and highlight their profound strengths.
