Restoring Hope in Your Life

As an organizational psychologist I often work with executives and their employees on performance appraisal issues. It is usual for companies to want to evaluate their employees so they can pay them fairly and also help them to develop. In order to evaluate performance we need to first establish goals. Sometimes goals are hard to articulate because a company's mission or purpose is not clear.

The same kinds of things can be going on with us when we lose hope. It is normal to evaluate our activities to see how we are doing. When we get depressed our evaluations may become distorted or overly critical. This can be particularly true if we have not been clear about what our personal goals are in the first place. Even more, we can quickly lose our way in life if we aren't sure about what our purpose or mission is.

So what can we do to restore direction and hope in our lives? Here is a simple process you can follow:
  1. Spend some time thinking about what has been meaningful and important in your life. Make a list of the things you have done that you have valued.
  2. Take a stab at writing a "personal mission statement" - what you would generally like do in your life that would be meaningful for you. See for a very good online tool you can use.
  3. Use your mission statement to guide your weekly planning making sure that urgent "activities" don't keep you from doing "important" or meaningful, personal mission-oriented activities.

Remember that while this is a simple process it may take a bit of time to work through it and put it into action in your life. While you are restoring hope try to be patient with yourself allow things to evolve gradually to a better view. It might be helpful to get some support while you are finding your way like in one of our online groups.
